Purpose
Abstract The research program of cruise M128 Azores Plateau mainly aimed at improving ourunderstanding of the igneous and tectonic processes that occur during the initial emplacement of large igneous plateaus and the subsequent interaction between intraplate volcanism and ultraslow rifting. The sampling program targeted the oldest and youngest igneous volcanic edifices in the Azores to better constrain the age of the submarine Plateau and the processes that led to changesin the magmatic activity. Routinely, the EM122 swaths opening angle was set to 60°/60° from nadir in water depths >2000 m, while wider angles (e.g., 65° between 2000 and 1000 mbsl, and 70° <1000 mbsl) were used in shallower water depths. The total hydroacoustic profile length was 1980 km for both systems.
