Purpose | |
Abstract | SO106 aimed at a contribution to an environmental impact assessment for the use of the deep sea, particularly by mining for polymetallic nodules. The soil mechanical, sedimentological, hydrographical, geochemical and ecological investigations were conducted in the SE-Pacific Ocean close to and in a German mining claim. These studies were supplemented by numerical modelling of water and particulate matter transports in the bottom-near water layer as well as in various layers deeper than 500m. HYDROSWEEP profiling concentrated on the long transit routes between the working areas. At some routes which were used repeatedly, several lines could be acquired in the course of time, which were placed side by side (with a slight overlap) thus producing a bathymetric strip of about 20 to 30km width. |
