Abstract | The main objective Meteor-cruise M86/2 was to investigate submarine hazards and their consequences in three selected areas off southern Italy (off Eastern Sicily, Messina Straits, Gioia Basin). Seismic were investigated and sediment sampling were taken during the cruise. The hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad systems EM122 and EM710 were used for bathymetric mapping. The deep water system EM122 was operated continuously during all seismic surveys but also on transit routes in a 24 hour schedule. The shallow water systems EM 710 was recorded in areas with water depths shallower than 1000m. During the cruise, the swath width of the EM710 was adjusted manually to get the best compromise between coverage and data quality with changing water depth and sea state. |
