Abstract | The major objective of the SO 144-3 cruise was the systematic sampling of volcanic rocks in the area between the Galipagos Islands and Central -South America. This work focused on the aseismic Cocos, Carnegie, Coiba and Malpelo Ridges, together with associated seamounts. These ridges are generally considered to mark the trail of the Galapagos hotspot. Multibeam bathymetry was recorded continuously during SO 144-3 whenever the vessel was outside the 12 mile territorial zone of Costa Rica. A total of 16,720 line-km was recorded during 75 profiles. During SO 144-3, a watersound velocity profile from earlier cruises off Costa Rica was used. |
