Abstract | The main purpose of the cruise was to study the sensory mechanisms of bioluminescence in the mesopelagic fauna. Furthermore, the presence of endogenous diel oscillators was investigated as a possible control mechanism for the daily vertical migrations of midwater animals. Multibeam mapping of the ocean floor was performed routinely when entering Peruvian waters. Unfortunately, in spite of favorable weather conditions and a comparatively low speed of the vessel, the data quality during the SO209 cruise was generally insufficient or bad. Abundant noise deteriorated the recordings. When the vessel headed against wind and swell the recordings were totally dominated by noise and the system was not able to determine a correct sea bottom depth. |
