Abstract | The main objectives of Cruise SO-217 are to determine the isotopic and geochemical characteristics of North Pacific thermocline water and cool South Pacific intermediate water; to evaluate the hydrographic profiles of the two main inflow paths; to document changes in the ITF inflow during the late Pleistocene and to test model predictions of a strongly reduced glacial throughflow and significantly changed hydrographic profile in the Makassar strait. Angular coverage of the EM120 on board the Sonne was typically set at 65° to minimize noisy data at high angles, however the sea state was so calm during this voyage that it was typically set to 70°. When the ship was slowed to under 10kn during formal surveys the angle could be increased to 72° on each side. The system behaved extremely well during the course of the cruise. |
