Abstract | The cruise SO228 aimed to research the hydrologic cycle of the Western Pacific Warm Pool that is presently influenced by variations in El Niño-Southern Oscillation as well as by high latitude climate and to test the hypothesis that atmospheric CO2 was sequestered into an abyssal water mass located in the Pacific during glacials and then ventilated rapidly during deglacials through intermediate waters that circulate through the Southern Ocean. The data quality of MBES during the survey east of Mindanao was poor. The data was characterized by numerous wrong depth detections resulting in data holes. But it was possible to close most gaps and to have nearly 100 % coverage of the southern part of the study area. The data quality at Davao Bay was good, only minor errors occurred, all concentrated in the inner beams. Off Papua-New Guinea the data quality was moderate with a lot of wrong pings in the center of the swath and a distinct wobbling in the outermost part of the swath. |
