Abstract | Palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic studies from the southern Baffin Bay suggest that, in the past, the development of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) and the oceanic circulation in this area have been tightly coupled. Therefore MSM44 researched the Melville Bay (northeast Baffin Bay) for glacigenic seabed features associated to past GIS advances and retreats. Several huge parts of Greenland’s coast are only insufficiently mapped or completely uncharted and thus are barely reliable in concern of navigation and interpretation towards glacigenic features of the last ice ages. The data acquistion was permanently monitored to ensure high resolution depth information throughout the cruise. In regions of highly interesting seabed features, systematic surveys were conducted in order to achieve a contiguous map for further analysis and interpretation. |
