Abstract | During Cruise MSM35 the hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad system EM122 was used for bathymetric mapping. The Kongsberg EM122 system is a multi-beam swath sonar using a nominal sounding frequency of 12 kHz. 288 beams with a 1° footprint are formed for each ping. The initial ship speed was approx. 8 knots, however with continuously worsening weather conditions the speed had to be reduced and to be adjusted depending on the course with respect to the wind direction. The quality of the bathymetric data acquired under these conditions is somewhere between fair and poor. In many cases, the ship rolled more than the maximum angle of roll compensation (+/- 15°) which the multi-beam system allows for. Water column data were not stored during this cruise. Sound velocity models were from CTD´s. |
