Purpose
Abstract During Cruise MSM20-3 the hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad system EM120 was used for bathymetric mapping from the shelf break to deep waters continuously in a 24 hour schedule. At the beginning, the system worked reliable and only minor data gaps exist. Unfortunately, the system started crashing several times when water depths became shallower, and finally, the system crashed totally on the 22.02.2012 at 09:02. With the help of the Kongsberg hotline it was possible to repair the system and egular data acquisition was started finally on the 05.03.2012 at 04:26. During the cruise, the opening angle was set to values between 120° and 150°, depending on the data quality of the outer beams, which in turn are strongly influenced by sea state conditions. The beam spacing was normally set to equidistant.
