Purpose During cruise P410, a site survey was carried out in order to identify adequate spots for the gravity cores and to complement the existing bathymetric charts by Geosciences Azur (J. Mascle, Villefranche-sur-mer, France).
Abstract The multibeam sonar system Multibeam 3050 from L-3 Communications ELAC Nautik (1) was used during cruise POS410. This system has been installed on RV Poseidon in October 2010 and was still in the testing phase. The Multibeam SB 3050 system on Poseidon is designed to operate in depths from 3 m to approximately 3000 m. The operating frequency is in the 50 kHz band. Maximum ping rate is 50 swaths per second and the maximum number of beams is 315. The maximum across-ship swath coverage sector is 140 degrees.
