Abstract | Multibeam swathmapping surveys were performed with the onboard multibeam echo sounder system Kongsberg EM1002. This is a shallow to medium water echo sounding system developed for ranges between 2 and 1000 meters. To assign a geographic position to a depth measurement, navigation data of MARIA S. MERIAN is provided by a Seapath intertial navigation system (INS). This data is based on a differential GPS signal from a Trimble SPS461 DGPS system. On this cruise 14 multibeam surveys were performed with an overall time of 72 hours. Throughout all surveys the EM1002 system worked very reliable. A problem not solvableduring this cruise was a systematic error in the outer starboard beams (approx. from beam 88 to 111). These were lowered about 1 m compared to the other beams in the fan. Therefore all these beams had to be deleted for every profile. The resulting profile width decreased to 80 % and the line spacing between the profiles had to be decreased significantly, too. |
