Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIII/4 along track lines of 8514 NM total length, mainly in the Amundsen Sea. A systematic bathymetric survey of 32 hours was carried out at Peter I. Island, completive to existing data. Approximately 240 km north of Peter I. Island (66°50'S/91°W), a small ridge was mapped with three survey lines. At the western De Gerlache Seamount (65°S/93°W) two multibeam profiles were added, crossing the top of the seamount. In the Amundsen Sea Embayment surveys were carried out in an 800 square kilometer wide area west of Abbot Ice Shelf (71°50'S/104°20'W), for 36 hours in the trough offshore from the central Getz Ice Shelf (74°S/118°W), and smaller surveys east of Bear Peninsula and close to Pine Island Bay. In the area of the Marie Byrd Seamounts data were achieved of several seamounts. The multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS-2 was operated in HDBE modus, most of the time with a aperture angle of 100°.
