Purpose With the help of swath sonar data more detailed maps of the seafloor will be produced. These maps are helpful for several field activities and interpretations: finding dredge positions, finding current-controlled sedimentary features and possibly detecting any traces or pockmarks of fluid currents.
Abstract The scientific objective of the project AISTEK III is to gather new geophysical data about the geological evolution of the Mozambique Ridge and the Natal Basin offshore southern Africa. The time period of interest is 140 Ma ago, when Antarctica formed a single continent with southern Africa. The project should give more information about the continental drift between Africa and Antarctica and about the origin of the Mozambique Ridge, particularly whether it is a continental fragment or consists of oceanic crust. The cruise track was planned in lines vertical to the spreading anomalies which reveal the paleomovements of the continents. Multibeam data were achieved during 53 days along track lines of 10,598 nautical miles. As result an area of 57,923 skm was surveyed.
