Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIII/5 along track lines of approximately 10,000 NM total length during transits, survey profiles and stationary work. The transit from Punta Arenas took course on 51°30'S most of the leg. Short surveys of submarine volcanos at about 50°S/5°E were carried out, followed by 8 days research, i.e. profile lines and stationary work in the Discovery Seamounts and 17 days in the area of the southern Walvis Ridge. The cruise was completed by 10 days in the last research area, the Cape Rise Seamounts and the Agulhas Ridge. The multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS-2 was operated using 59 beams and 90° aperture angle. The refraction correction was achieved utilizing sound velocity profiles, sampled during the cruise. The quality of data might be reduced during bad weather periods or adverse sea ice conditions. The dataset contains raw data that are not processed and thus may contain errors and blunders in depth and position.
