Abstract | M29 continued a long-term geoscientific study aimed at reconstructing the mass budget and current systems of the South Atlantic during the late Quaternary. A series of sampling stations for M29/1 was planned along 5 transects from the shelf off Argentina to the deep Argentine Basin between the La Plata River and the Islas Malvinas (Falkland Islands). The sampling locations are situated in the zone of the Malvinas current and the Brazil/Malvinas confluence. The shipboard multibeam echosounder Hydrosweep was operated by the scientific crew during a 24 hour watch. The system worked without any technical problems. However, due to the frequently very rough sea, the data coverage of the Hydrosweep system was not very good and could not be operated appropriately most of the time. |
