Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIII/7 along track lines of approximately 8,900 NM total length along transits, survey profiles and partly during stationary work. Data were achieved mainly in the northwestern Weddell Sea southward of the South Orkney Islands. Track lines were placed to complete bathymetric data in Orkney Passage (41°W, 61°S) and Philip Passage (49°W, 61°S). The vicinity of an earthquake epicenter was surveyed with a length of 22 NM in 5 transects, the area had an extension from 42°50'W-43°45'W and 60°20'S-60°35'S. Further areas of data achievement were the Bransfield Strait, where a transect on 55°W was measured, the Powell Basin and the slope regions of the continental shelf. The multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS-2 was operated using 59 beams and 90° aperture angle. The refraction correction was achieved utilizing 22 sound velocity profiles, during the transits from and to Cape Town by the system's own cross fan calibration.
