Purpose
Abstract M47 was organized to bring together research focused on the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean from very different disciplines as oceanography, geophysics of the ocean crust and reflection seismics combined with marine geology and geochemistry. The second leg applied diverse geophysical methods in the vicinity of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to investigate the structure of the oceanic crust. During the survey the trade winds blew consistently from the SE, resulting in a swell of generally ~1m, at times up to 2 m. As a result of this swell HYDROSWEEP only produced good useable data when steering a course towards the north or slightly west of north, i.e. with the swell and with the wind coming from the starboard. This restricted the area that could be mapped to perhaps half that we had planned. The data collected along these tracks were generally of reasonable quality.
