Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIII/8 along track lines of approximately 6,000 NM total length, that are mostly non-systematic in terms of bathymetric surveys due to the expedition's biological program. Multibeam data were measured along transits, partly during stationary work and along survey profiles. Systematic and areal multibeam survey was performed in the area of the former Larsen A/B Ice Shelf, where the topography was mostly unknown before. Additional surveys were performed near Joinville, Elephant and South Shetland Islands. The multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS-2 was operated using 59 beams and 90°/120° aperture angle. A roll and pitch bias calibration was carried out on a pre-selected profile at 2500 m water depth. The refraction correction was achieved utilizing the system's own cross fan calibration, except for the calibration period, when a CTD was deployed in order to measure the water sound velocity profile.
