Purpose
Abstract The main aim of the project is to address the causes for a prominent bathymetric swell around the Islands of Cape Verde in the central east Atlantic Ocean, a feature caused by hotspot volcanism. In addition to plate tectonics, hotspot volcanism is caused by the Earths internal (i.e. radiogenic) heat production. The HYDROSWEEP uses a frequency of 15.5 kHz and 59 beams in a swath of 90° the system can map the seafloor with a scanline width of up to twice the water depth. The range of the central beam is up to 10,000 m with an error of about 1%. The range of the outer beams is up to 7 km with a precision of about 1% if the ships roll is less than 10° and pitch less than 5°. HYDROSWEEP multibeam data were continuously recorded as long as RV Meteor operated in the research area around the Cape Verde Islands. The main survey was done around the active volcanic island of Fogo, where a sector collapse of the eastern flank left a prominent scar in the feature of Fogo.
