Purpose
Abstract The east African continental margin off Tanzania and Kenya was the target of a research cruise carried out by the MARUM. The research is directed towards a better understanding of paleoclimatological changes, sedimentation processes and coastal dynamics. The paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic studies will deal with the role of the tropical Indian Ocean in the climate system during the late Quaternary. Swath bathymetry was carried out along all profiles with the hull mounted SIMRAD EM120 (KONGSBERG) and on specific profiles at water depths < 600 m with the hull mounted SIMRAD EM710 (KONGSBERG). The EM120 operates at a frequency of 12 kHz and provides 120 beams and a maximum swath angle of 128°. The EM710 is designed to yield high resolution bathymetry information in intermediate water depths and operates at 70 kHz with 400 beams and a maximum swath angle of 160°.
