Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XXIII/9 along track lines of 10,030 NM total length. Data were gained along the transit from Punta Arenas via Neumayer station to the Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, which was the main investigation area of the expedition. The continental slope between Prydz Bay and Kerguelen Plateau was surveyed along two seismic profiles. Multibeam data were also measured during the entire transit from Prydz Bay to Cape Town via the Kerguelen Islands, crossing the Southwest Indian Ridge and the Agulhas Plateau. Most of the time, the multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS2 was operated using 59 beams and 90° aperture angle. In shallow water 120° aperture angle was used. The refraction correction was achieved utilizing the system's automatic cross fan calibration and eight CTD profiles, sampled in the Prydz Bay. The dataset contains raw data that are not processed and thus may contain errors and blunders in depth and position.
