Purpose
Abstract M77-1dealt with the investigation of the sediment and sediment bordering water body in the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone. Investigations comprised the in situ measurements of turnover and fluxes of nitrogen compounds, nutrients, trace metals, phosphate and iron across the sediment-water interface at variable oxygen concentrations of the bottom water. The EM120, a deep-water multi-beam operating at 12 kHz, and with 191 beams were used during the cruise. Additionally was an EM710, 1-by-1-degree broadband multi-beam echosounder operating between 70 kHz and 100 kHz and with 400 beams. The EM120 echo-sounder was operating during the whole cruise, while the EM710 was switched on at our main working areas, and when the depth was less than 1000 meters. In the surveys it was identified that interferences in the EM710 data were caused by the PARASOUND system. In the EM120 data were "internal indifferences" identified, the central beams showed at water depths lower than 300m a "rail".
