Abstract | The Leg M77-2 dealt with paleoceanographic studies for the reconstruction of past atmosphere and ocean climate interactions. During all surveys was the EM120 designed for water depths starting at 600m until 12.000m used. The second system used was the EM710 designed to operate from 800 meters to shallow waters. The EM120 system was operating the whole cruise, acquiring multibeam data from about 3000m up to 60m, while the EM710 was normally switched on at water depths shallower than 1000 m. Due to hardware defects and overheating the EM 170 was operating with 256 beams and was available only during the first half of M77-2. To reduce interference of the PARASOUND system with the EM710 system, they had to reduce the gain of the PARASOUND system to 100 mV and the opening angle of the EM710 beams to 80-90°. For the EM120 there were no external interferences, but internal ones, since the central beams showed clearly a rail,at water depths lower than 300 meters. |
