Purpose
Abstract SO83 studied four main areas in order to achieve the study of the mineralogical and geochemical composition of phosphatic, oxidic, siliceous and carbonaceous mineral phases: offshore Portugal, Lion Seamount, Ampere Seamount and Tropic seamound. The comparison of these areas gave information about the influence of local oceanographic and morphologic conditions on precipitation and sedimentation. Bathymetric surveys were carried out in four areas, Setubal Canyon, Principes de Avis, Lion Seamount, and Tropical Seamount. A mean SVP for the water column was calculated, that worked fairly well and delivered especially for the side beams more accurate depths than a fixed sound velocity. The total track length sums up to 1196 nm and the total area surveyed covers more than 4000 km2.
