Purpose Multibeam data were collected to extend the global database of seafloor topography and to provide high resolution bathymetry for the expedition's scientific program.
Abstract Multibeam data were measured during R/V Polarstern cruise ANT-XVIII/5a along track lines of 7,790 NM total length. Data were achieved mainly along the West Antarctic continental margin, during surveys in the area of Peter I Island and Marie Byrd Seamounts, and during a 14 day survey in the Eltanin impact area at the Freeden Seamount. The multibeam sonar system Hydrosweep DS-2 was operated using 59 beams and 90° aperture angle. The refraction correction was achieved utilizing the system's own cross fan calibration. The quality of data might be reduced during bad weather periods or adverse sea ice conditions. The dataset contains raw data that are not processed and thus may contain errors and blunders in depth and position.
